The Lovekyn Chapel is the only remaining free-standing chantry chapel in England and, dating back to 1309, it is the oldest complete building in Kingston.
Although no longer used for religious services, the Lovekyn Chapel is now the most popular venue for Civil Ceremonies and Civil Partnerships in the Royal Borough and, with its excellent acoustics, for classical concerts too.
The chapel can seat 60 wedding guests comfortably.
The Lovekyn Chapel is a venue for civil ceremonies, civil partnerships, blessings and Champagne receptions in a beautiful setting in the heart of Kingston-upon-Thames.
A stunning light-filled room provides space for the ceremony. An elegant and bright area, making it perfect for weddings and any musical performances or readings.
Large windows, a magnificent vaulted, beamed ceiling and arched doorway all give this venue a very special character. Reflecting its 14th century medieval heritage, the room combines understated elegance with original period features. If you want the tradition and ambiance of a church rather than a soulless hotel or registry office, but you do not want a religious service, our chapel is the venue for you! It is something a little bit different.
“A little oasis in the middle of a vibrant cosmopolitan town….a hidden treasure” has been said of The Lovekyn Chapel .
What could be more romantic that saying ‘I do’ in a medieval chapel?
Built in 1309, the ancient walls hold so much and evoke the rich history of this building which was being used for spiritual devotion until Henry VIII’s dissolution of the chantries and monasteries.
Our 14th century medieval chapel stands today as it did all those years ago and is the oldest free-standing chantry chapel in England. As a Grade II listed building it exudes a rich and intimate atmosphere and has a wonderful heritage. It is acoustically excellent & therefore a superb venue for live music (we have a grand piano and there is no fee if you have a friend play your wedding music).
From the moment you make your initial enquiry, you can be assured of excellent attention and service. The Chapel’s dedicated wedding coordinator understands that every couple has a dream to fulfil and want to add that unique touch to create their own perfect wedding. Our wedding coordinator will be in The Chapel on the day to alleviate all stresses and to ensure that you have complete peace of mind and a truly memorable day.
The Chapel is simply decorated with shades of pastel and white, and you can have your own flowers delivered or opt to use our abundance of tasteful silk flower arrangements at no extra cost.
A separate entrance and private waiting room for the bride ensures that the guests (and more importantly the groom!) do not see her before the walks down the aisle if she does not wish them to.
A unique exceptional service which we offer is a Champagne reception for absolutely no extra fee. The couple supply the drinks and we will serve it to the guests immediately after the ceremony in our pretty courtyard garden during photographs. We do not charge corkage or any fee for this service and, if the weather is inclement, we will serve it inside The Chapel itself.
Background music can be played in the garden during photos and drinks reception if you wish, and the little courtyard buzzes with laughter and chatter as the Champagne flows and guests toast the future to the happy couple. No wonder the Lovekyn Chapel is such a popular wedding venue! No other venue in Surrey or the Home Counties is quite like it.
Ceremonies are now welcomed throughout the year and, being flexible in our approach, we delight in helping to achieve the perfect day for any of our couples.
Whether you are looking for the simplest of weddings or one which is strikingly different, we will strive to make your ceremony exactly as you wish it to be. And, as we only allow one wedding a day, The Chapel is exclusively yours. We look forward to giving you a warm welcome at our beautiful little chapel.
Can I get in to The Chapel early to decorate?
A: We open The Chapel two hours before a wedding so you can have it decorated if you so wish. Our in-house wedding coordinator will be on site on the day to implement and oversee deliveries.
How many guests does The Chapel seat?
A: The Chapel is suitable for up to 60 weddings guests. It has toilet facilities, disabled access and heating.
Are there additional fees?
A: There are no hidden charges. Booking guarantees you will have the venue entirely and exclusively to yourselves.
How many parking spaces in the Kingston Grammar School car park do you provide?
A: We provide parking for the wedding car & Registrar.
Can we get more spaces in the Kingston Grammar School car park if needed?
The Wedding Coordinator will endeavour to reserve you more spaces in the Kingston Grammar School car park if she is able.
The Chapel is near a main road, is there noise from traffic?
A: The Chapel walls are very thick and so little traffic noise is heard inside. In the courtyard garden there is a high wall which prevents anyone seeing in to the garden. With guests drinking and chatting and music being played, street noise in minimal.
Can we bring in any food?
A: Yes you can bring in whatever drinks and food you wish. However, we do ask you to remember that we are a medieval chapel, we do not have a kitchen or trestle tables. We have one small table for the drinks and one small table which can hold a small number of canapés.
Where do guests park?
The NCP Cattle Market car park is a two–minute walk away.
Who performs the ceremony?
The couple need to contact the Registrar at Kingston Registry Office.
