New House name revealed!
The House Competition witnessed its first major change in 85 years when a new House was added at the beginning of this term.
The name of the new house is to be Stanley House, after distinguished Old Kingstonian Stanley Shoveller who won two Olympic Gold Medals in Hockey (1908 and 1920) and was awarded the Military Cross for his service in the Great War.
The students in the new House played an important role in determining the identity of the new House by voting on what its colours, its emblem and perhaps most significantly its name would be.
The inaugural House members decided by a majority on the colours of black and silver, to have a stag as the emblem for the House (in a nod to the local Royal Parks of Richmond and Bushy Park) and for the name to be Stanley House, after distinguished Old Kingstonian Stanley Shoveller who won two Olympic Gold Medals in Hockey (1908 and 1920) and was awarded the Military Cross for his service in the Great War.
Stanley House joins Lovekyn, Queen Elizabeth’s and Walworth (all established in 1914) by the then Headmaster, CA Howse and Taverner House which was added in 1921 to compete for 2016-17 House Championship.
Miss K A Brackley is the Head of Stanley House and Mr H R Lawrence is her deputy. Miss Brackley commented that she was, “looking forwards to leading Stanley House” and that she was, “keen for students to get involved in as many House Events as possible.”
House Captain Jess Murray and Vice Captain Matthew Pugh have also already been actively encouraging their fellow Stanley students on to success with both seen cheering from the touchlines at the recent Junior House Football and Netball events at Ditton Field. Jess revealed that she was, “honoured” to have been appointed the first captain of Stanley House.
