Vaughn Dearling (Former Staff 1969-1973)

The many friends of Vaughn will have been shocked by his death in the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital on Sunday 8 May following his recent stroke. The condolences of the club go to his wife Kaye, son Owen, daughter Natalie, and all members of the family on their great and sudden loss.

Vaughn was a very popular member of the club and in the wider hockey community with his friendly manner and enthusiasm for the game of hockey. Through his coaching at Kingston Grammar School and Bungay High School generations of pupils are indebted to Vaughn for handing down his love and extensive knowledge of our game to them.

Vaughn went to The Harvey Grammar School in Folkestone before training at St Luke’s College in Exeter. He then taught geography and PE at Kingston Grammar School and he played for Old Kingstonians in the London League as well as Wales Under 23’s.

After moving to Norfolk he played his first team hockey for Norfolk Wanderers, Norfolk and the East in the 1970s as a very skilful centre half. He then joined Magpies serving as vice-captain of the 3rds in the early 1980s and later becoming team secretary. He went on to coach at different times the Ladies’ and Men’s 1sts. He coached the Men’s 1sts in their unbeaten 1991/92 season in the East Premier league which saw them promoted to the national league and he coached them for the ensuing season. He also had successful spells coaching Ipswich Ladies in the European Cup, Ipswich HC and Ipswich & East Suffolk HC and he coached many other teams including East and Norfolk junior teams.

In recent seasons he has concentrated on umpiring and the club is indebted to him for umpiring as one of the club’s members in the Norfolk pool.

Vaughn made this enormous contribution to hockey while for years having a severe hearing loss.

Hockey has lost a devoted servant by Vaughn’s death but the far greater loss is suffered by Kaye, Owen and Natalie who have lost a loving and devoted husband and father.
