Drama at Kingston Grammar School is a vibrant, inclusive and highly regarded part of school life. Our outstanding Drama and Theatre Department combines exceptional examination results with a wide-ranging co-curricular programme, offering opportunities for performers, designers, technicians and creative thinkers alike. Drama plays a powerful role in developing communication, empathy and self-confidence. Whether or not students choose to pursue Drama academically, the skills they gain – collaboration, presentation, resilience and creative problem-solving – support success across the curriculum and beyond school.

Productions and performances

Drama at KGS extends far beyond the classroom, with a rich calendar of productions, performances and clubs open to all students. Participation is encouraged both on stage and behind the scenes, fostering teamwork and artistic expression.

Major productions include
  • Sixth Form play: recent productions include Chicago, Antigone, Made in Dagenham, Rhinoceros, 13, Nell Gwynn and Earthquakes in London.
  • Upper School Play (Fourth and Fifth Year): past shows include King Charles III, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Vote, Great Britain and Love and Information.
  • Lower School Play (Second and Third Year): always full of energy and imagination, recent titles include Little Shop of Horrors, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Oliver Twist.
Other highlights
  • Informal performances: opportunities for exam groups and Drama Scholars to share their work throughout the year.
  • House Drama and House Dance: two lively and much-loved competitions where students from all years take part.
  • First Year Showcase: a one-night-only performance in the Summer Term featuring songs, monologues and scenes.
  • Edinburgh Festival Fringe: every two years, Sixth Form students have the opportunity to perform at the world’s largest arts festival.
Drama clubs and technical theatre

Our clubs nurture creativity at every level and give students the opportunity to explore all elements of theatre-making:

  • Junior Drama Club: An informal club for First to Third Years, often run by Drama Scholars, focusing on improvisation and performance.
  • Beginners’ Technical Club: Introduction to lighting, sound, costume, props and set design.
  • Advanced Technical Club: For older students designing and operating technical elements of school productions.
  • Fringe Theatre Club: A relaxed, discussion-based club where students independently attend and reflect on local theatre performances.
Professional-standard facilities

Located in The Michael Frayn Theatre, students benefit from professional-standard facilities, including fully equipped lighting, sound and staging.

We also have a flexible studio space and a green room, where students rehearse, devise and explore all aspects of theatre-making.

Whether your child dreams of taking centre stage or working behind the scenes, Drama at KGS helps them grow in confidence, creativity and collaboration.
