Academic Life

Academic ambition sits at the heart of Sixth Form life at Kingston Grammar School. Starting in the Lower Sixth, students follow one of three academic pathways, each designed to be rigorous yet flexible, providing a strong foundation for progression to university, apprenticeships or the world of work. These pathways allow students to tailor their academic experience while developing the skills, independence and intellectual curiosity needed for life beyond school.

Students select from 26 A Level subjects, each taught over 13 lessons per fortnight, allowing for depth of study alongside independent learning. Teachers work in close partnership with students, bringing the curriculum to life in innovative and creative ways while maintaining high expectations.

For the first time, students are able to focus on the subjects they most enjoy, developing the habits of scholarship required for university and beyond.

Academic outcomes

Over the past three years, the A* to B pass rate at A Level has averaged 92%. Year after year, the vast majority of our Sixth Form students secure their first-choice course or university, whether applying within the UK or to leading institutions overseas.

Around 10% of students gain places at Oxford or Cambridge each year, with many others progressing to highly competitive Medicine and Veterinary Medicine courses, as well as top UK and international universities.

Choose your pathway…

Starting in Lower Sixth, students follow one of three academic pathways. Each is rigorous, flexible and designed to give them a strong foundation for university, apprenticeships or the world of work. Whether students want to specialise, keep their options open or pursue additional qualifications, our staff will help them build a route that suits their strengths and ambitions.

A typical week in the Sixth Form

A Sixth Form timetable balances academic study with enrichment, Games afternoons, lectures and wider co‑curricular involvement. With a choice of more than 100 co‑curricular clubs and activities, students can explore new interests, deepen existing passions and develop a wide range of skills beyond the classroom.

Alongside A Level lessons and independent study, students participate in Academic Enrichment, the KGS Accelerator and House activities. Many are involved in Community Service, Young Enterprise, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, music, drama or competitive sport, creating a varied and purposeful week.

Students are encouraged to manage their time responsibly and to engage fully with the opportunities available during their two years at KGS, ensuring a rich and well-rounded Sixth Form  experience.

“For the first time, I was able to focus on the subjects I genuinely enjoy. The teaching is challenging, but you’re encouraged to think independently and take ownership of your learning.”
