About KGS

Essential information about KGS, from our vision to our values.

We have a long history, but our aims are timeless: to prepare young people for the world around them, instilling aspiration, participation, partnership and regard along the way.

Our history

On 1st March 1561 Queen Elizabeth I put her seal to a Charter which established the “free grammar school of Queen Elizabeth, for the education, training and instruction of boys and youths in grammar.” There is written evidence of a public school in Kingston at least 200 years earlier, and some historians suggest that the Charter was putting the royal stamp on a school that had been operating since the Middle Ages.
