It is difficult to overstate the level of challenge that this year’s GCSE cohort has faced over the last 18 months.

In addition to the disruption to their learning through extended periods of school closure, they have also had to contend with some of the uncertainties around the examination process, and the various assessments that have been set in their place. We are therefore particularly proud that they have not just risen to the challenge, but exceeded it, with an outstanding set of GCSE results.

Much has already been written this week about how comparisons with previous years are not wholly appropriate. That is, of course, because the challenging circumstances that these students have worked through are beyond all comparison. We should therefore simply let the results speak for themselves: an exceptional 71% of all grades were 9/8, and 43% were at the top grade 9. 90% of grades awarded were 7-9.

While we hope that all our students are pleased with the outcome of this year’s unusual process, particular recognition goes to those who have been awarded grade 9s across all their subjects. These include Alistair Anthony, Angelina Campbell, Adam Comley, Hattie Fowkes, Katie Monaghan and Sachin Patel with 11 grade 9s, Madi Good, Eleanor Hauck, Henry Hill, Fia Mahdi, Katie Mullally, Amelie Scott, Saskia Thompson and Daniel Wilding with 10, and Lucas Dwyer, Evie Hurn, Jemima Jordan, James Keywood, Harriet Lannero and Jasmine Levell with 9 at grade 9.

Head Master Stephen Lehec said: “In difficult circumstances, and in times of such ongoing uncertainty - especially for young people - our students have remained focussed, balanced and calm. I am extremely proud of them all, for their fortitude and patience as well as their academic success. We would all have hoped that this year would have seen a return to ‘normal service’; that was not to be but these students have met the challenge head on. Wonderful parental support and the dedicated efforts of our teaching staff have helped to ensure this cohort of young people can step into the next phase of their education with confidence and pride.”
