Character Education and trips

Character Education is the process of teaching students core ethical values, attitudes and behaviours that contribute to their moral and civic development. It focuses on fostering traits such as respect, responsibility, honesty, empathy and perseverance but also aims to develop confidence, communication, team and leadership skills. The goal is to help students develop as people, so that they have a strong moral compass and the skill and ability to make ethical decisions in their personal and academic lives.

Character is shaped in many ways. It is caught through a positive school culture, where students are expected to be kind, respectful, and act with integrity, and through the role modelling of older students, alumni, and staff. It is taught in lessons that explore ethical dilemmas, historical figures who stood for justice, and contemporary issues such as genetic engineering. It is sought through experiences beyond the classroom, such as community service, School Parliament, Prefect roles, fundraising, sport, music, drama, and leadership challenges like CCF, Duke of Edinburgh, and Outward Bound expeditions.

We encourage students to develop eight key attributes: Confidence, Communication, Curiosity, Creativity, Compassion, Teamwork, Leadership, and Resilience. Opportunities for reflection and personal growth are embedded in our tutor programme, assemblies, and co-curricular activities.

In their first few weeks, First Year students take part in a Bonding Day to build friendships through fun activities. At the end of the year, they are invited on a five-night Outward Bound residential in Aberdovey, Wales, where they step out of their comfort zones through climbing, abseiling, raft building, and camping. This experience is designed to build resilience, teamwork, and confidence.
