Sport at KGS

Guide to Sport

Welcome to sport at KGS! We understand that starting a new school can be overwhelming, but we hope to ease the transition by providing useful information about the different sports and activities available to our students, where they will be played, what kit they will need and who to approach for guidance.

Our primary goal is to ensure that our students enjoy their Games lessons, after-school practice sessions and Saturday morning sport. In these sessions all students learn new skills and sports, create unforgettable memories and forge lifelong friendships. We encourage our students to give their best while learning new skills and endeavour to provide stimulating and enjoyable sessions and fixtures for all.

We are confident that students will find their best sporting option and make the most of the fantastic facilities available at KGS, especially at Ditton Field, and our brilliant coaching and teaching team. If you or your child have any questions ahead of starting in September, please contact the Sports Administrator, Mrs Vilasoa at [email protected].

Sport in the First Year

In the First Year, we focus on hockey, which has a long-standing tradition at KGS. We believe that all our students should have the opportunity to experience this fantastic team sport, regardless of their skill level or aspirations. Our experienced coaching team is dedicated to helping each student develop their skills and grow their passion for the sport.

From September 2025, all First Year students will have a term of football in addition to their hockey programme. The girls will also do a half term of netball from February to Easter. Our Games programme provides opportunities to represent the School in hockey, football and netball.

After-school clubs will run every week and we encourage students to make the most of these opportunities and play as many sports as they can for as long as they can. The timetable for this will be confirmed by the end of the Summer term.

During the Summer term, we ask all First Year students to play cricket, guided by an excellent group of cricket coaches. We also hold trials for tennis, which result in a competitive squad selection, and training sessions start in the Spring term to prepare our players for the summer season. There will also be training opportunities on Saturdays and after school in the Summer term. We also also offer athletics which takes place at Kingsmeadow.

As students move through the school, rowing will become available as well as a wide range of options, which currently include real tennis, climbing, golf, squash and cycling, amongst others.

Below is the current timetable of Sport for First Years.

  • * The Tuesday Games day may change subject to final timetable confirmation. We will share uniform and kit expectations for specific days once confirmed.
  • Games lessons take place at Ditton Field.
  • After school training sessions finish at 6pm. While not compulsory, we strongly encourage regular attendance, especially for those wishing to represent KGS in fixtures.
  • Saturday sport may involve either: training which students are encouraged to attend; or a fixture against another school. Students who attend after school training may be selected to play in a fixture which they are expected to attend. If your child is not available to play in a fixture, please provide the Sports Department with at least two weeks’ notice.

Games Sessions

Tuesday Games will cover a range of activities including fundamental movements, ball skills, gymnastics and athletics.

Friday Games sessions take place during periods 5-6. Students register with their form in the Junior Quad at 1.30pm before proceeding to the coach that will take them to Ditton Field. Coaches are available to bring students back to the school after each session.

Co-curricular clubs and events

There are a number of sport clubs that are part of the co-curricular programme including table tennis, running and golf. There are also several House sports events available, culminating in a whole-school Sports Day at the end of the Summer term!

After School sport

Students participating in sessions held at Ditton Field or a venue away from the school site will travel there by coach with a member of staff. After-school sessions finish at 6.00pm. After the session, students can either leave directly from the venue or take the coach back to school.

All sports training sessions and fixtures will be visible via SOCS. If a student would like to be selected for a sports team, then they should attend after school training sessions on a regular basis.
